Safe Herbs for Pregnancy Natural Remedies

When learning which pregnancy natural remedies are safe to take, it is important to remember to always talk to your practitioner before taking any supplements or herbal remedies.

Some herbs contain compounds which can lead to early labor, miscarriage, or other fetal injury. This list is not meant to replace a practitioner's advice. Talk to your doctor, midwife, homeopath, or other professional before making any changes to your intake.

Herbs that are Unsafe to Take During Pregnancy: - Please avoid these herbal supplements during pregnancy as they may cause complications to you or your baby.

  • Saw Palmetto
  • Goldenseal
  • Dong Quai
  • Ephedra
  • Yohimbe
  • Pay D' Arco
  • Passion Flower
  • Black Cohosh
  • Blue Cohosh
  • Roman Chamomile
  • Pennyroyal
  • Herbs that may help you during your less-than-pleasant pregnancy symptoms: - In case I hadn't mentioned it yet...it's very important to speak with your practitioner before taking any of the following.

  • Red Raspberry Leaf - This herb may be one of the most prescribed herbs for use in pregnancy. It's properties are so useful to the pregnant woman that it seems the sole purpose for its creation...

Red raspberry leaf not only contains loads of iron (very important to you and your baby right now) but it also helps tone the uterus for a quicker, easier birth; eases labor pains; increases milk production; decreases nausea; and some reports have even stated that it can reduce complications during birth (which makes sense.)

This "miracle" pregnancy herb should probably only be used after the 1st trimester as there exists some controversy over its safety during the first three months of pregnancy.

  • Ginger Root - can be a great help with morning sickness! (Remember mom giving you ginger ale for an upset stomach? Or does that show my age....)

  • Slippery Elm Bark - In low doses, this herb is safe to take for morning sickness, heartburn (oh, the burn), and minor vaginal irritation.

  • Peppermint Leaf - Another great aide in the symptoms of morning sickness. Can also help relieve that embarrassing gas that comes with having a baby pushing on your bowels.

  • Oats, Oat Straw - Helps to meet your calcium and magnesium needs, oats also can help relieve the anxiety, restlessness (nesting anyone?), and skin irritations associated with prego-ness.

  • Dandelion (root and leaf only) - Can help reduce swelling due to edema, improve liver health, and is rich in Vitamin A, iron, and calcium.

  • Chamomile (German) - Helps with insomnia and joint pain, also high in calcium and magnesium.

  • Whatever pregnancy natural remedies you use...remember to speak with a professional first, k? :)
