This can be a tricky stage for a lot of parents. Although they are still babies in some senses, they are entering into young childhood. They are beginning to establish their identity and individuality...a wonderful time indeed!
Toddlers are introduced to rules for the first time and, mixed with their developing sense of independence, this can lead to some full-on temper tantrums. Know that this is normal and healthy.
Their new-found mobility presents some real safety concerns. Toddlers should be gently reminded of the rules for safety ("don't touch...hot", "don't run away from mommy", etc.)
Patience is key during this time. It's so important to remember that, while your toddler may seem out of control sometimes, they are building the foundation of their sense of self-worth right now. Tread gently with these precious spirits.
