Advice, Tips, and Organic Baby Food Recipes

Use these great tips on feeding baby as well as the organic baby food recipes to get you started. One of the greatest gifts we can give our children is a healthy start in life.

Consider using an organic, natural baby formula. There are several brands available, including Earth's Best Organic Baby Food and Horizon Organic Baby Formula. For vegan parenting, soy based formulas are also available certified organic.

Consult your doctor before introducing solid foods. Typically, between 4 and 6 months of age parents begin introducing solid foods.

Very runny cereal mixed with breast milk or formula is given once a day to start, gradually increasing to three meals a day by about 8 months.

Foods to Avoid the First Year
honey
egg whites
cow's milk
nuts, especially peanuts and peanut butter
shellfish (shrimp, clams, crabs, etc.)
citrus (orange juice, grapefruit, etc.)

After your baby's first birthday, talk to your doctor about slowly introducing the above foods.

Introducing Solid Food:
Follow these guidelines for making any organic baby food recipe:

  • Only introduce one new food each week. This will allow time to assess for allergies.

  • Use ice cube trays to freeze portions of baby food. Once frozen, pop the cubes into a zipper freezer bag or container. Label everything with date and contents.

  • Don't begin to introduce meats until baby has become used to cereal, vegetables, and fruits.

  • Steam or microwave fruits and veggies as opposed to boiling them. This ensures that most of the nutrients remain in the food. The new microwave steaming bags I've seen in the grocery stores are perfect for this!

  • Never save left-overs after baby's done eating. Baby's immune system is still developing so we must be extra careful to avoid any exposure to bacteria, etc.

  • The basic procedure for making organic baby food involves steaming or microwaving the fruit or veggie until tender (if making potatoes, apples, or pears, baking is another possible method.)

Puree food in a blender, food processor, or other similar device using breast milk, water, juice, or formula for thinning.

  • Don't fret if making your own is too time consuming. You can always buy organic baby food (Earth's Best Organic Baby Food or Gerber Organic Baby Food are both great options.)
