Natural Pregnancy Tips

Use these natural pregnancy tips to keep you and your baby healthy and safe:

  • See your practitioner regularly - Consistent, quality prenatal care is extremely important in preventing complications during pregnancy.

  • Maintain your nutritional needs - By taking prenatal vitamins and following a good diet, you're giving your baby and yourself the best chance at staying healthy.

  • Wash your hands often - Hand washing is the best thing you can do to prevent illness and infection.

  • Don't clean up after kitty - Cat feces can contain toxoplasmosis, a toxin that can harm your baby. If there's no one else who can clean the litter, wear a safety mask while cleaning and wash hands immediately.

  • Avoid fish, including shell fish - High levels of mercury found in fish can harm a developing fetus.

  • Stay away from our reptilian friends - Reptiles can easily spread salmonella to humans. Salmonella can be found on their skin and in their feces. Pet iguanas, lizards, turtles, etc. should all be avoided.

  • Drink your water (spring water if possible) - It's so important to stay hydrated during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Make sure you are drinking 6-8 8 oz servings of water each day.

  • Stay out of the hot tub - Very hot water should be avoided during pregnancy as it can harm a developing fetus. For this reason, if you develop a fever (>102 F) seek a doctor's care.

  • Avoid exposure to chemicals - Use natural, non toxic cleaners and stay away from any possible exposure to toxic materials.

  • Let go of the lattes - Caffeine during pregnancy. It dehydrates you and some studies show it can negatively affect your baby's health.

  • Do I need to say it... No smoking, no alcohol, and no illicit drugs. Don't take any OTC or prescription drugs without talking to your pharmacist, doctor, or midwife about its safety.
  • Make sure you take the time to pamper yourself. Take time each day to get in touch with your body and the changes that are happening. This is a wonderful time and one which you will always look back on as such an important period of your life. Congratulations!
