How to Improve Gas Mileage, No Matter What You're Driving

Taking these small steps to improve gas mileage will not only help to reduce your carbon footprint, your wallet will thank you too!

Many of us just cannot afford to go out and buy a new hybrid car right now. But no matter how much of a gas-guzzler you have now, there are things you can do to help:

Good Maintenance

Keeping your car tuned up, changing the air filters, and having regular "check-ups" at your favorite mechanic's shop will help increase your gas mileage.

Check Your Tires Regularly

Driving with under-inflated tires reduces your gas efficiency by 1 percent per PSI. Check your tires at least once a month.

Clean Out the Trunk

Any additional weight means your car must work harder. The harder it works, the more gas it'll use. So stop procrastinating and unload that junk.

Slow 'n Steady Driving

Speeding, for obvious reasons, increases the fuel requirements for your car. Slowing down by just 5 MPH can reduce your gas consumption...you'll be safer too! Erratic / aggressive driving also affects efficiency because of the constant speeding up and stopping. You know who you are!

Hot Out? Open the Window

Air conditioners, as opposed to heaters, require additional gas to run them. Only use the air when absolutely necessary.

The Ethanol Solution

Most of us are now using E10, a blend of up to 10 percent ethanol which reduces carbon emissions in all vehicles. However E85 is becoming more available and many of you may be driving vehicles approved for this super-clean blend of 85 percent ethanol. Click Here to Find Out if Your Car is E85 Approved
