Green Living for Your Family

Green living is quickly growing in both necessity and, luckily, popularity. Also know as sustainable living, this lifestyle can be as simple or involved as you decide. And it doesn't have to cost a thing!

The true beauty of forming a community committed to protecting the future of our children is that each small effort we make is multiplied exponentially by the actions of everyone in that community. This approach empowers all of us to reverse global warming and live in harmony with our environment.

Please explore the information here to find ways that your family can participate in green living. Have some tips you'd like to share with our community? Please sign in to our forums and contribute or send us an article you've written...we'd love to post it!

Steps to take right now:

Change your light bulbs!

Replacing just one 75-watt bulb to an energy efficient fluorescent bulb cuts about 1,300 pounds of global warming pollution. Even though these bulbs are a little pricier up front, they last longer and use less energy saving you money in the long run.

Use your shades.

Opening shades during sunlight hours not only provides natural light but also helps to heat up your home. On colder days make sure to close the shades, especially if you have drafty windows, to protect the heat being produced inside your home.

Don’t forget to unplug or turn off!

Make sure lights and appliances are off when not in use. Many of these continue to draw power even when they’re off, and throw away those plugged-in air fresheners. Turning your computer off when not in use saves energy AND the life of the computer.

Eat Green

(But skip the green eggs 'n ham.) We are all aware of the millions of acres of rainforest that is destroyed for meat production each year. Even when produced locally, meat production produces more green-house gas emissions than crop farming. Cut back on your family’s meat consumption and avoid mass-produced products (fast food). Not only will you be helping the environment, you’ll feel better too!

Buy local and in season. Don't forget the hidden energy costs in transporting produce over thousands of miles. I think we can all survive without eating strawberries in December.

Curb your water usage

Shorten your showers, turn water off while brushing teeth, fix any leaks. Only run your washing machine (on cold) when a large load is available. Water your gardens and lawn during the cooler times of the day (better for the plants too!)

Recycle

This is a great place to get the kids involved. Put the kids in charge of collecting and sorting recyclable material or finding new uses for items being throwing away.

Consider the packaging of products before purchasing (Is the packaging excessive? Is it recyclable?). Look for products made with recycled material.

Clean Green

Try to use Earth friendly cleaning products whenever possible. Be aware of what is in the products you use and how much you really need to get the job done.
